Episode 84: The Feel Sessions 084: Seoul Searching (1996 Flashback Remastered)

1996, The progressive house movement was exploding, evolving into something even bigger, inspiring dance floors and listeners around the world.
These were styles I fully embraced.

That February, Utopia started on the Las Vegas Strip. A month later, I became the full time main room resident DJ, starting an incredible 5 year journey through legendary music and a lifetime of unforgettable memories.

Not long before, Joe Cancino, aka, DJ Grover, told me about a new record pool called Balance. Soon after his endorsement, I was added to this select roster of only 40 hand picked DJs in North America.

We received exclusive promos and test pressings from underground dance and electronic labels throughout the UK, Europe, America, and Australia.
Balance was everything…

Hooj Choons, Perfecto, Bedrock, Baroque, Distinctive, Hope, Hook, Renaissance, Vapor, Glow, XVX, and countless other labels pushing boundaries and showcasing sonic artistry.

At the same time, I was reporting a weekly chart to Billboard Magazine, one of only 100 DJs in North America, whose charts were compiled into the weekly Dance Club Songs chart.

With those two prestigious positions, and memberships in a few other great record pools, vinyl records were delivered to my doorstep every single day - for years! On top of that, I was buying and collecting music like mad - a faithful vinyl junkie.

This gave me incredible access to the freshest new music, before it even hit shelves, and the means to share it, not only with the Las Vegas scene, but around the globe with my mix tapes and radio shows, both online and terrestrial.

Then came a mix tape that changed everything - Seoul Searching.
A nod to the city of my birth, and a play on words that captured my inner journey as much as the sound.

Although I had been producing mix tapes by the hundreds…
giving them away, and mailing them to record stores nationwide,
this one was pivotal, as it led to my very first out of state booking.

The promoter, Ryan Rushing, flew me out to headline a modest underground party at The Root in Boulder Colorado.
Along with my growing notoriety with Utopia, that gig grew my career by leaps and bounds,
and I began playing in Colorado several times a year, and soon, I was getting booked all over the US and Canada.

As I remastered this mix, I was transported to a place and time where the music was fresh and exhilarating, beautiful and intense, epic yet pensive.

Reflecting on my life’s journey through the lens of a DJ, it’s filled with amazing moments, and just as many challenges, losses, and lessons along the way.
Moments that can’t be conveyed in words or images… you just have to listen to these sonic vignettes… and feel them.
This was my form of expression, communicating joy, and sharing love.

After all, music is one of the strongest uniting forces in the universe.
It transcends borders, cultures, and language…
It dissolves boundaries, inspires connection, and has the power to heal.
Music speaks directly to the soul.

Episode 83: The Feel Sessions 083: Live At The Spirit Utopia Celebration (240404)

Think back to some of your most cherished and fondest memories.
Take a moment.

Where were you? Who was there? What were the sights, sounds, and smells?

We all have them… special memories that shaped who we were, and who we were to become, especially in our twenties, probably the most formative of years.
For so many, including myself, some of the most treasured memories are those of Utopia.

In the spring of 1996, a unique conjunction took place…
An alignment of time, space, and people, that would create a movement that broke the mold.
A movement based on love, spirituality, and equality… grounded in music, and imbued with endless positivity that would eventually transcend space and time.

Without question, these were the times of our lives…
A spiritual awakening for many, and a coming of age.

However, after an amazing four year run, it didn’t really have an ending… there was never a concrete conclusion or resolution, a final scene if you will. It just faded away… dissolved…
and many of us simply drifted apart to follow our own paths.
Sure, it evolved and transformed gradually over those years, transitioning from Utopia to Club Utopia, but regardless of how much of a contrast there was from the start to the finish, the spirit was always there, an essence that continues to live on as a flame of inspiration in all of us.

There’s so much to be said about this topic, but if you know, you know, and if you were there, you were a part of something truly magical that brought so many people together.

A few weeks ago, another alignment took place that sparked a reunion with the founders and some of the central figures involved in Utopia, some of which hadn’t seen each other in over 20 years. The catalyst for this was to celebrate Guylene’s 50th birthday, one of the original flower girls, and a core member of the family. Gino and Yvonne, Vickie & Miguel, Mike, Matthew, David, Kimberley, Leslie, Michelle, Dana,Dario, Doug, and myself, as well as many of the extended family of club goers were in attendance, and yes, emotions ran high and there were tears of joy.

It’s hard to find the words to fully describe all the love I felt from seeing you all again, with so many fond memories and positive emotions coursing through my being of all the beautiful souls that I’ve been blessed to have had such special times with… experiences old and new that I will always cherish as the best of times.
Tears roll as I feel so much joy as well as regret for not keeping you all in my life for so long, but I know that’s about to change.
It’s amazing to reflect upon the fact that something we were a part of so long ago eternally cements us together in a bond that transcends space and time.
I love you all so very much, and I’m endlessly grateful for such a wonderful week.

Episode 82: The Feel Sessions 082: Trona Encounter

I was recently asked to play a small invite only desert party, and as you know, there’s nothing like the drive of necessity to spark inspiration, so I dove in, and prepared.

This is the set I played at that party, and it’s mostly breaks. Yes, I said it, breaks!
There’s a bunch of hot new remixes of 90’s classics, including 808 State, Massive Attack, Pete Lazonby, Chakra, and the Xpansions.

For me, one of the highlights of this mix is Warsaw, a track from Sultan + Sheperd's new album called “Something, Everything” and it’s a killer return away from cheesy EDM, and back to tasteful electronic dance music, which is why I fell in love with them in the first place.
You’ll find that right at the 68 minute mark.

Then I turn towards some recurrent progressive and tech. It’s almost 3 hours long, so prepare yourselves!

Up first, it’s a unique oldie from Orbital, Kein Trink Wasser. I don’t know what that means, but the persistent piano line sure is fun.

The Feel Sessions 081: Voyager

I recorded this mix earlier this year, and as some of you know, it premiered on DJ Sense’s YouTube Channel, Casa Del Soul / VidMixxTV as a full length video. I promise you won’t be disappointed. It’s a journey through space and time, so that’s why I call it “Voyager.”

Part of the reason that I haven’t been keeping up with this podcast is because I’ve really been working on re-inventing myself, as I think many people are doing in these uncertain times. What’s my new re-incarnation gonna be, you might ask?

I’m currently in a re-branding phase, pivoting to a creative agency that handles photography, filming, video production and editing, audio engineering and voice over… an all-in creative solution so to speak. So I’ve been gearing up, training and practicing, especially with video. I’ve already started some personal passion projects in this regard, so stay tuned to my social media for new content, including brand videos, travel videos, and especially, time lapses.

The Feel Sessions 080: Flashback: Carbon 002 (2002)

In the previous episode, I talked about how progressive house had turned to a darker, somewhat ominous sound in the early 2000’s. Throughout my DJ career, I’ve seen the ebbs and flows of underground music shift through various phases of vibrations, often reacting with an opposite pull to what’s happening in the more mainstream music environments of the time.

For this partciular period from around 2001 through 2006… let’s call it the “Delta Heavy” phase, named after Sasha & Digweed’s Delta Heavy Tour. Characterized by moody vibes, dark textures, atonal sounds, trippy effects, narrative style vocals, tribal tones, and driving, heavily percussive rhythms, I honestly loved this period of underground progressive house. You can hear many of these influences in today’s Techno, Progressive House, and Tech House productions.

This mix was meant to compliment and contrast the more mainstream appraoch of Carbon 001, which, if you refer back to Episode 79, was intended to be a crossover mix in an attempt to bridge the gap between the mainstream and the underground.

One of the tracks that never left my crate during this era, was Pablo Gargano’s “Gangsta” on EVE recordings UK, because it used an infamous sample from the movie, “Goodfellas.”

The Feel Sessions 079: Flashback: Carbon 001 Crossover (2002)

The year was 2002, and by this time, the HipHop takeover was in full swing. The hey days of the rave scene and the global house music movement had seemed to peak, at least in terms of its’ mainstream appeal. But, there were still many of us trying to keep it viable in a crossover nightclub environment.

Back then, the glory days of Utopia were gone, with venues like The Drink, and the brand new Rain at the Palms taking over. The struggling C2K nightclub in the Venetian was primed for a takeover, and that’s exactly what we set out to do. My Aussie friend Adam Ward and I laid out plans to transform the space into a haven for those of us still craving to have house music properly represented in a large Vegas venue, and we named the night “Carbon.” Yeah, we were trying to get fancy and philosophical, because Carbon is the common element found in all known life forms, so we thought it would be a good name that had layers of meaning behind it.

By this time, progressive house was beginning to take a darker and more minimal stance, and you could say that this movement was ultimately represented by Sasha & Digweed’s “Delta Heavy” tour, which, for those of you who were around back then, had a stop in Vegas, at the very same venue… C2K.

Personally, I loved this sound, but as underground dance music often does, it had evolved into a backlash against what was happening in the mainstream music environment at the time, and proved to be too much of a stretch, and unpalatable for the casual underground dance music fan.

So, we tried to come up with a blend of mainstreamy and underground dance music that would appeal to a wide audience, playing crossover house music, discohouse, and remixes, while going deeper into progressive as the night went on. We even incorporated live performance acts, like a guy doing Tai-Chi on stage! But, alas, timing is everything. The landscape and conditions just weren’t right. The musical zeitgeist had moved on, at least in terms of hosting a dance music only night in a large space.

The Feel Sessions: Episode 076: Flashback: The Funky Ezekiel (1995)

Let’s set the stage… The year was 1995 and I was the resident DJ at the Palladium, probably the biggest nightclub Las Vegas has ever seen, and I was also playing part time at the legendary Shark Club. I had an Apple Macintosh Performa 630, Bill Clinton was in office, I had my very first cell phone, a Motorla m300 flip complete with an extending antenna and a bulky battery, and eBay was first launched.

At the time, I had a Sclat 8 DJ mixer by Spanish manufactuer Ecler, an exquisite full size 19” rack mounted mixer that featured a modular console build, 110 mm faders and a whopping 16 inputs. I still have this mixer in storage by the way! Plus a Pioneer AV Receiver hooked up to some janky JBL home theater speakers where I had replaced the tweeters with horns, and three dual cassette decks so I could record and dub copies. I think they were made by Pioneer or JVC. Remember, this was about 5 years before I would start using Pro Tools. All this was assembled in my bedroom on a set of garage style shelving units that I got at Home Depot.

Breakbeat was a dominant part of the underground electronic music landscape, and since Pulp Fiction was a huge part of the pop culture zeitgeist, it was only natural that I used Samuel L. Jackson’s infamous Ezekiel 25:17 speech from the soundtrack as an intro… hence the name of the mix, The Funky Ezekiel.

Recorded on the highest bias metal cassette tape I could buy at the time at Tower Records, I had to do multiple takes to get the intro to line up with the big snare on the first track just the way I wanted it. And, since this was before I was using any kind of digital audio editor, if I fucked up, or if the mix wasn’t up to my perfectionist nature, I had to start all over, which I often did.

At the time, I was living in a vintage house near the Stratosphere, and one of my roommates was Greg Ryan, the founder of Scope, an alternative monthly magazine newspaper that would later evolve into The Las Vegas Weekly. He’s the one who turned me on to Adobe Illustrator. I would buy blank, white, high bias cassette tapes, cassette cases, and Avery cassette labels, all in bulk. I then created the artwork for my mixtapes, printing out the cassette stickers and J-cards. By the way, special thanks to Greg for giving me my start in Graphic Design. I would crank these tapes out by the hundreds, giving them out to everyone, and eventually mailing them out, which in turn led to my first out of town DJ booking in Denver. More on that on another episode when I feature Seoul Searching, a mix from 1996.

Featuring a bevy of tracks that defined the early to mid 90’s West Coast Breaks scene from artists like The Bass Bin Twins, Jedi Knights, Hard Hop Heathen (aka Omar Santana), Josh Wink (only known as Wink at the time,) and The Chemical Brothers! Hell, The Chemical Brothers weren’t even The Chemical Brothers back then. They were first known as The Dust Brothers. Naming themselves after the production duo famous for their work with The Beastie Boys, once they started to get international recognition, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons were forced to change their name after objections were filed by The Dust Brothers themselves.

A Big part of the West Coast Breaks scene and underground house music in general at the time, was Acid, that unique, squelchy, alien sound produced by the infamous Roland TB-303. And without going into a dissertation about Roland, this Japanese manufactuer’s 808 and 909 drum machines are staples of many music genres today, including Dance and Hip Hop.

Music was produced and mixed quite differently back then, and there are limitations to how much bass and bottom end a vinyl pressing will handle. Engineers, even to this day, have to master for vinyl differently than digital, as too much bass can literally skip the needle out of the groove! But, since we’re in the digital domain here, I remastered the mix, giving it a lot more bottom end, and a touch of sheen on the tops, using the UAD Neve 1073 EQ, the Virtual Tape Machine by Slate Digital, and the Waves L3 Ultramaximizer.

One of the descriptive terms I touched on earlier is breaks, which is short for breakbeat. So, what is a breakbeat? Well, most house music is written in a 4/4 time signature, in fact, the vast majority of music that we’re familiar with in the Western world is 4/4. But specifically to house music, there’s a variant that’s sometimes known as four to the floor, which means that there’s a kick drum on every beat of the measure… four kicks, in four beats which is a measure.

Breakbeats on the other hand, in it’s simplest form, only have 2 kicks in a measure, on the downbeats, 1 and 3, alternating with the snare on the 2 and 4 counts. Now, there are tons of variations and syncopations, but that’s the basic framework.

Now, house music is typified by a 4/4 beat, it’s one of the defining characteristics of the genre… that relentless thump that pushes the energy forward. And like I talked about in episode 74, it’s also the foundation of Disco, which is really where the four on the floor beat was first popularized, and then somewhat carried through in 80’s New Wave, reflecting the movement towards electronic beats. Not that it wasn’t used before at all, but if you listen back to the history of recorded music, it’s all about breakbeats… everything from Jazz, Big Band, Country, Soul, Motown, Funk, Classic Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, Grunge, Metal, and Top 40. And genres like freestyle, triphop, and drum & bass are defined by breakbeats.

But, since electronic music draws on so many genres and structures, why not incorporate breaks into the house music landscape? Breaks are funky! They just make you wanna sway your hips and shake yer ass, right?!

The Feel Sessions: Epsiode 075: Celebrating 100,000 Downloads

It's a hallmark occasion, and although I’ve been doing this show for much longer, The Feel Sessions as a podcast officially turned 8 years old recently. Filled with over 130 hours of content and well over 3 times that in logged production hours, I’m extremely proud to announce that this very show now has over 100 thousand downloads! Damn people!!

To all of my loyal listeners, fans, followers and subscribers, I give you a warm, heartfelt, and sincere thank you. I appreciate each and every one of you for your support, kind words, and spending some of your valuable time with me on my musical and personal journey, and although I can’t see you, I can feel your smiling faces and love coming back to me through the wires. People like Reann, Tanya, Terry, Sarah, Adam, Chad, Danny, Vanessa, Jen, Ira, Jeff, and so many more wonderful boys and girls out there … I wish I could give a shout out to each and every one of you, and give you a big fat hug too.

I hope I’ve given you a sonic escape, a bit of insight, and maybe a few laughs… but most of all, joy and inspiration. Humbly, I’m grateful to be in all of your orbits. Right on!

So, there’s a huge misconception out there that Djing is easy. They might say things like, “you’re just pressing buttons,” or “oh, you get to play music for a living, how fun!” And while these statements are partially true, I’m here to tell you that when done properly, it’s NOT easy. There’s a lot of hard work, time and dedication that goes on in the background, in preparation for what we do as DJs that’s hidden under the surface and behind the scenes.

One of the biggest jobs for a DJ is taking on the role of a librarian - a curator. Obtaining, downloading, buying, sifting, collecting, classifying, organizing, tagging and integrating new music is a massive undertaking! And keeping track of so much music to be able to recall it at a moment’s notice is the ultimate goal.

Now, I definitely take things to another level, A) because of my background music service company, Auratunes, where I provide custom playlists for businesses like restaurants, bars, and retail stores, and B) because I’m just a nerdy freak that loves to get super granular on details. But believe me, all that work and preparation pays off.

Sometimes, I get tracks that may not work in the context and flow of one of my DJ sets right now. But I’ll classify and tag them with descriptive terms that will help me find them in the future, especially because it’s hard to recall each and every track by artist and title alone.

Tagging the comments field with adjectives and adverbs that I can search for in the meta data, like melodic, chunky, funky, moody, thick, light, tight, breaks, lazy, aggressive, sexy, proggy, uplifting, deep… you get the idea, or even including what instruments or sounds that are used in a track, like saxophone, rhodes, arpy, 303, 808, 16th hats, full vocals, etc., lays the groundwork and foundation for future DJ sets when the mood strikes or circumstances arise.

Here’s a tip for all you DJ’s out there. Try to come up with descriptions that are unique, so that those tags are easier to find when doing a search. These can be contractions, acronyms, or even made up words that don’t normally occur.

For example, let’s say I’m searching my library for progressive house. Well, the words progressive and house will probably show up in other fields that you may not be interested in seeing, like the album or title. But, if you shorten it and eliminate the space between the words into proghouse, it will narrow your search to exactly what you’re looking for. We all think differently, so it’s all about organization and coming up with a system that makes sense for you.

Today’s mix is a perfect example of all of this behind the scenes work. While some of these tracks are brand spanking new, half of them are a few if not several years old… I might not have discovered them until recently, or I might have been storing them in my physical and mental library, ready to put ‘em on deck when it suited the vibe, sound, and programming placement I’m feeling at the time. So, I’ve assembled a a little journey starting off with breaks and then progressing into nudisco and house tracks that lend themselves to a chunky breakbeat type of vibe… with some old and some new, featuring samples of Blondie, The Notorious B.I.G., Janet Jackson, and even Herb Alpert. And then, as an added bonus (I was in the moment and feeling the mix), I top it all off with some of my all time favorite progressive jams from what I think is one of the glorious periods of Progressive House, the mid to late 2000s, with Satoshi Tommie, Arno Cost, Dinka, and Sebastien Leger.

Coming up, a tasty dreamy gem by Be Svendsen called Andromeda, which I just can’t get enough of at the moment, and a laid back, funky remix of a classic by Sound 5 called The Hacienda Must Be ReBuilt. Later in the show, we’ll hear from Discotron, Dr. Packer, Jay-J, Miguel Migs, Lisa Shaw, Birdee, and one of my top ten favorite producers of all time, Spirit Catcher.

Right now, it’s a fresh, updated version of an epic 1999 monster, Greece 2000 by Three Drives On A Vinyl. All you Utopia heads will definitely remember this one. Remixed by Sebastian Davidson & Melosense, it morphs this trance classic into a cool, modern chill-out track that sounds great at a wide variety of tempos, and it’s definitely one of the best remixes of this track, ever.

The Feel Sessions: Episode 074: Something Disco

Ya know, I’ve always had a soft spot for Disco… yes, Disco from the 1970’s. Although I was too young to truly experience this era of music, nor was I nearly old enough to get into Studio 54, I did hear my parent’s playing it on their 8-track in the family station wagon. In particular, I recall a period where Donna Summer’s “Bad Girls” album was in heavy rotation. Yeah, my parents, like most of America, had a brief stint with Disco - it was everywhere, a pop and cultural phenomenon… you couldn’t avoid it.. my Mom even had a curly perm!

As my DJ career grew throughout the 90’s, I discovered more and more about this often maligned genre, and came to embrace it heavily. Whether it was a mobile DJ gig, a wedding, a corporate event, or even open format nightclubs back then, Disco always meant one thing - FUN. It just has a way of galvanizing people with a universal appeal, and you could always count on these records to get the crowd up and going, and dancing, which was a huge part of Disco culture itself.

Now, coming up with a definitive top ten list is almost impossible for me, on any topic, and I’m definitely not a connoisseur of the genre, for that, I’d have to defer to my friends Patrick Labbate and Jeff Kutash, but some that come to mind right away are Funkytown by Lipps Inc., Donna Summer’s “Last Dance”, Shalamar’s “The Second Time Around”, and one that I can definitely without a doubt put in my top 10 Disco records of all time, “Come To Me” by France Joli, on Polydor Records, 1979.

In July of 1979 at Comiskey Park in Chicago, the glory days of disco came crashing down when a crate filled with disco records was blown up on the baseball field between doubleheader games. Now, I’m not gonna go into a deep dive about the history of disco, but my point is this: no matter how you feel about Disco, we wouldn’t have house music without it. Out of the ashes of disco, and fused with a host of other influences and styles, House Music emerged in the early 80’s, and has never stopped evolving since, and ironically, Chicago is credited with being the birthplace of House Music, in the very same city where it’s predecessor died.

Even to this day, old disco records are sampled and used in modern productions, especially in the genre, yes, you guessed it, DiscoHouse.

So, in this mix, I’ve got a set of groovy, feel-good disco tinged house and nu-disco.

The Feel Sessions: Episode 073: Underground Vibes

What’s up boys and girls, Robert Oleysyck here, and welcome to episode 73 of the Feel Sessions, this time, with some fresh beats and underground vibes.

You know when you hear a new song, and it just immediately grabs you and just pushes your hot button? That’s how I felt when I heard “It Makes You Forget” by Peggy Gou, a Berlin based Korean DJ and producer (YAY!)

There’s just something about this track that I can’t get enough of… I mean, it just has everything… it’s groovy, it’s percussive, it’s dreamy, it has drive and emotion, it has a DOPE female Brazilian vocal that’s just so hot and sexy, AND a hint of acid? Faaack. … it’s a perfect combo!

Anyway, you’ll hear it about halfway through the mix, followed up by “Ultimatum,” Disclosure’s latest, a vibey track with an AfroTribal twist and some juicy Rhodes organs. HOT

And then, it’s the latest from Audiojack, with his remix of Made by Pete called “So Long,” with a ridiculously haunting vocal by Jem Cooke.

As if that wasn’t enough, it’s the new hotness by Ferreck Dawn & Robosonic, “In My Arms” with infectious piano and vocal loops.

Dang, I can listen to this grouping of tracks back to back on repeat all day.

Plus, we’ll hear a moody ditty from Little Dragon, a Kraftwerk remake by Joey Negro, Kevin Yost, and some flashbacks by Maceo Plex, Tiga, Audion, Solomun, Depeche Mode, Eric Prydz, and a Radiohead remix by Gigamesh.

The Feel Sessions: Episode 072: Best of 2018 Part 2

Now, I need to clarify that, just because some of these tracks may be a little older, I include them here because I first learned about them in 2018 and played them a lot in my live sets. I believe that new music is what’s new to me in the moment, regardless of when it was released. It’s the act of discovery that keeps us young at heart.

One of my absolute favorites from last year was “Ghosts” by Henry Saiz and Band, and I couldn’t resist playing two different mixes of this track because they’re just so damn good. Off of his recent “Human” album that was crowdfunded on KickStarter, it’s a supreme effort of collaboration that aims to sonically capture the vibe of different locations around the world, including Australia which is portrayed in this song, Dubai, Kenya, Saigon, Joshua Tree California, and even Antarctica… whoa, what was that trip like? The project took a year and a half to complete.

Why does time seem to move at a much slower pace when we’re children, going by faster and faster as we age? One explanation is that as children, we’re filled with new experiences and new information all the time, which later becomes familiar - losing this intensity of perception. Time seems to slow down when we’re exposed to new environments and experiences. So with this in mind, I can tell you it’s been a long year, but in a very very good way. Filled with newness, excitement, promise, creativity and productivity, I’ve spent this past year traveling more than ever, exploring my passion for photography, and venturing down two new career paths.

So, here’s the scoop!

I recently launched my new career as a voice over artist! Yes, you heard me right… voice acting, voice over… whatever you wanna call it, I’ve been studying, training and receiving professional coaching over the past 2 years at The Voice Actors Studio, right here in Las Vegas, under the tutelage of Melissa Moats and company. And I’m proud to announce that I was just added to their staff as a trainer and coach, specifically for audio engineering, studio setups, and as a Mac expert. For those of you who’ve been following my podcast for a long time, you probably noticed that at a certain point, I started talking, which I had never done before on the show. Well, that’s right around the time I started down the path of taking voice over seriously.

It’s a musical and dance adaptation of the history of the mob in Las Vegas,featuring the life of Michael Franzese, an actual former capo of the Colombo Crime family. It reveals the unique and compelling story of crime, loss, redemption and love.

Which brings me to my next bit of news… I’m the Music Director for A Mob Story… responsible for music selection, audio production, editing, FX, sound design, AND mixing and mastering! It’s been an almost two year process and I’m just so proud and honestly, downright honored that they entrusted me to contribute my creative visions and sonic sensibilities to the arc and fabric of the show. I owe it all to director, producer, and choreographer Jeff Kutash, who just happens to be an Emmy and Golden Globe award winner. He just gets it, and we had such a great time collaborating and exchanging ideas.

All of my work was done off site, right here at Auratunes, so when I first saw the finalized production (complete with lighting, costumes, and an updated sound system), I was giggling with delight, and honestly, I was choked up with emotion to see the result of our hard work and efforts. So, I hope you’ll all be as moved when you see it, and hear it for yourself.

And last but not least, travel and photography. I’ve been taking pictures ever since I was a little boy, and had a knack for it right away. It wasn’t until the age of 13 that I got my first “real” camera, a Minolta X-570 SLR, but once music and DJing found me in my first year of college, that went by the wayside, until last year when I got the bug again and picked up a Sony Alpha A7ii, a mirrorless full frame camera, and now, I’ve got photography on the brain.

Seattle, an Alaskan cruise, Zion National Park, Page Arizona, Lake Powell, Bryce Canyon, and even Mt. Charleston, Red Rock Canyon, and local parks right in my own back yard, I’ve been fortunate to have time to explore these areas, and so grateful for the wonderful sights and experiences I’ve had with friends and family. One of the reasons why I love Progressive House so much, is that, it tends to create a space that’s open to interpretation, waiting to be filled with imagery and ideas from your own imagination. Whether it’s a breathtaking landscape, an other worldly vista, or even a fractal, hypnotic mind trip into the vastness of the universe itself, Progressive House has a thoughtful, pensive nature that can transport you to another state of mind. The dictionary defines pensive as “engaged in, involving, or reflecting deep or serious thought.” On an emotional level, it often serves as a method of escapism, invoking a variety of moods from sexy and laid back, to fierce and energetic, at least, that’s my take on it.

Here's a live set from my recent show at Juicy Beets in Las Vegas, where I debuted three of my latest productions. This was my first time playing at Juicy Beets, and I have to say, I love the space. The MNTRA boys do it right, with a great setup, sound system, friendly staff, and a nice, intimate vibe. This is definitely one of the best spots to experience underground dance music in Las Vegas, and I’m looking forward to coming back soon.

I was about halfway through writing the melody and beats, and I remembered this interview that I heard on NPR, featuring a British neurologist by the name of Oliver Sacks. He believed that the brain is “the most incredible thing in the universe,” and experimented with a lot of medicinal plants and other drugs to treat his patients, as well as himself. What follows is a fascinating insight into his mind and experiences, and it just called to me, so I had to sample him. I’ve included a link in the description to find out more.

One of my subscribers recently asked me about my process of mixing, producing and engineering this show, including DJ equipment, software, blending techniques, and plugins. Well, all I can say is, thank you. It takes a lot of time and effort, and I'm so glad that it's appreciated. Anyway, if you're not into the technical mumbo jumbo, you might wanna skip ahead a few minutes.

First, it all starts with the programming… selecting tracks and sequencing them in an order that feels right to me, always with the intention of a building journey in mind. Usually, I'll start with a dry run, selecting a track or two that I'd like to open with, and then doing the rest on feel… hence, The Feel Sessions. I might back up and exchange tracks as I go, but part of this process is getting familiar with the tracks themselves and learning the story of the songs, adjusting grids and markers, and making tagging notes.

I've been using Native Instruments Traktor with an S4 controller for about 3 years now, and I love it. The only thing I don't love is the power of the headphone output, it's severely lacking, but I get around this (somewhat) by using an external headphone amp. That's one of the reasons that I'm eyeing the S5 controller, plus the fact that the S5 has a separate booth output as well. Special thanks to my BFF Chad Stolarick for pushing me to make that change. Previously, I had been using Serato for many years, and it was a game changer, as it was for pretty much all DJs. But after a horrendous experience with the early versions of Traktor that was bundled with Stanton's "Final Scratch," in the early 2000's, I was a bit reluctant, but now, I'm all in. In defense of Native Instruments however, it really came down to Stanton's shoddy hardware, not the Traktor Software.

In terms of blending, I generally apply subtractive EQ techniques paying close attention to summing. If you're not familiar with these, it's too much to cover here, so I recommend you look them up, as they're vital to the mix process, not only in the DJ world, but in the production realm too. Last year I replaced my aging Event DJ monitors with a pair of JBL LSR 308's, and I highly recommend them.

Once I'm happy with the mix, I'll bring it into Pro Tools with a Universal Audio Apollo Quad interface. Now, I'm not totally sold on the fidelity of the S4's sound card. It's not terrible by any means, it's actually fine, but it lacks a touch of warmth and sheen compared to using an analog mixer. I'm not sure if it's the D to A converter, other circuitry, or a combination of these. So, the first plug-in in my chain is the Neve 1073 EQ, where I'll add just a nudge of high shelf to give me the sparkle and a bit of bite that I want. Next, is the Slate Digital Virtual Tape Machine set to High Bias, 30 fps, and the half inch 2 track setting, warming up the digital recording, especially in the low end. Then comes the Waves RComp, which I simply use to side chain the voiceover and ID drops. All topped off with the Waves L3 Ultra Maximizer limiter, making the mix loud and proud. As far as producing the voiceover, well, that's a completely different subject, so, maybe another time.

So, I know it's a little off topic for this show, but bear with me. Have you seen Blade Runner 2049 yet? Man, I gotta tell ya, I thought it was amazing, and I don't say that lightly. Between the story, cinematography, acting, and special effects, it's a masterpiece in my book, and rivals the original, which is one of my favorite films of all time. Hollywood could have easily screwed the pooch on this one, and I was cringing at the idea, but thankfully it didn't disappoint, and in my opinion, it's one of the best sequels ever made. Give credit to director Denis Villeneuve and the rest of the team.

One of the reasons the original from 1982 resounded so strongly with me was the soundtrack by Vangelis. To quote Wikipedia, "… it's a dark, melodic combination of classic composition and futuristic synthesizers, which mirrors the film-noir retro-future envisioned by Ridley Scott." Now, not to downplay the brilliance of the entire composition, but the most well known track is the theme that played during the end credits, simply called "Blade Runner (End Titles)."

This brings me to today's flashback episode. In 1997, I recorded a mix, on cassette tape, called "Moments In Time." It was inspired by a new record that I had gotten then, which re-created the Blade Runner theme into a Progressive Trance monster. This reminded me of one of the most gripping monologues in the film, the scene where Rutger Hauer's character, Roy Batty, realizes the value of all life, just before his own inevitable demise. So, I sampled it for the intro. According to legend, Rutger Hauer altered the original script, and wrote the final lines. Pretty amazing.

Comprised of Progressive Trance and Progressive House from that era, this mix originally clocked in at a blistering 137 BPM, which was pretty standard for the time, but I find it hard to enjoy at that pace nowadays, so I took the liberty and slowed it down to around 132. For all you tech heads out there, I used the Elastic Audio feature in Pro Tools on the Varispeed setting. I didn't want any artifacts that tend to creep in when time stretching this much with pitch compensation.

Let's talk about the act of discovery. Comin' across new tracks that you love is exciting for any music fan. As a DJ and music programmer, it's a major source of enjoyment, and I look forward to it. But nowadays, shopping for music and navigating the sheer volume of tracks that get released every week can be extremely daunting and tedious, but finding that one stellar track or handful of songs can turn a mundane task into excitement, giving me the motivation I need to keep pushin' on.

I always keep an ear out for tunes, it's my job, and discovery can come from a variety of sources… the radio, a tv commercial, Shazaming something I hear when I'm out, or sound tracks and needle drops in a movie, and I find so much great music this way. For instance, I watched "Baby Driver" the other night (great flick by the way), and I wound up buying a slew of songs on the soundtrack. This is a prime example of the fact that discovery isn't just about brand new music, it's also about being exposed to old songs, and learning from the ongoing music history lesson that occurs in my life.

In 1982, the disco/funk band Chic with guitarist Nile Rodgers released the song "Soup For One," and when I recently heard it for the first time, I was like, "Yes, OK!, that's where that guitar riff came from!" I was excited! Now, I'm sure all you disco heads out there are rolling your eyes right now, but hey, I didn't know! As any house music soldier that's worth their salt would recognize though, is that it was sampled by the French house music duo, Modjo, on "Lady (Hear Me Tonight), which was an international smash in 2000.

Another recent "discovery" is "Just Be Good To Me" by The S.O.S. Band in 1983, which I just found out was produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, the guys behind some of Janet Jackson's biggest early albums, and a big part of the New Jack Swing movement. Previously, I had only known of the remake by British dub group Beats International, fronted by Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim. It was basically a cover version, and hit #1 in the UK and #1 in the US Dance Club Chart in 1990. Again, another music history lesson for me.

So, as we say farewell to summer, and welcome the cooler breezes of autumn (finally), it's time for another live Brunch set from my residency at Herringbone in the Aria Hotel, right here in Las Vegas, featuring a bunch of flashbacks and remixes influenced by 70's and 80's disco/funk, including those two recent "discoveries," as well some Indie Dance, NuDisco, and Deep House. The Progressive House genre has always been something that I closely identify with, and in part, it's defined me as a DJ. It's the the kind of music that I feel in my heart and soul, and it truly speaks to me. With its pulsating rhythms, cerebral tones, and inspiring vibes, it can be either melancholy or melodic, but to me, progressive house is at its' best when it combines elements of both. It's when glistening melodies, scenic soundscapes, and dulcet tones are juxtaposed against pensive, meditative, and often spiritual groundings, invoking a sense of yearning, with a cosmic perspective. When it's instrumental, it communicates thoughts and emotions without words, and can transport you.

But sadly, it kinda went away for awhile, especially in terms of Beatport's classification anyway. Somewhere around 2010, we started to see a gradual morphing of the genre. The sounds became bigger and noisier, the buildups longer and more intense, and the breakdowns became massive, leading to an overblown, predictable style, that soon evolved into what became known as EDM. But really, it became a commercial, clubby, festival sound.

I'll be honest with you, there are some elements of it that I like, and still do. EDM isn't without merit, it was simply a sign of the times, and a generational changing of the guard. In fact, I'm actually glad the EDM movement happened, because it broadened the scope of mainstream American audiences to an even wider sound palette, which expanded the realm of possibilities for house and electronic music in general.

Throughout my almost 30 year career as a DJ, I've seen music styles come and go, in an organic cycle of action and reaction… ebb and flow. But inherently, that's the beauty of electronic music… it evolves.

Some of the progressive house producers either adapted and embraced this new style, while others shied away and side stepped into tech-house, techno, or deep house, and true progressive house became harder and harder to find. Thankfully, and finally in September of 2016, Beatport responded to the number one request by their customers, and re-categorized over half a million tracks, creating a new classification called Big Room, and making way for the progressive house genre to return to it's roots once again, with the proper designation, and a modern reincarnation.

On deck, let's dive into this modern progressive house sound, with the latest from Maceo Plex, Art Department, Guy J, Matan Caspi, and a classic by Blackwatch and Greed, plus an absolute monster by Adrian Hour, called "Love Something."

Somewhere between 1998 and 2002, there was an emergence of a new sub-genre, called Nu Skool Breaks. I've always been super fond of breakbeats in any way shape or form, but this new offshoot had a punchier, more straight forward sound, borrowing from drum & bass, electro, and progressive… and I absolutely loved it right out of the gate. So, on this flashback mix, we'll go back to the year 2004, when this show was on Proton Radio, with an epic 3 hour mix, filled with some gnarly Nu Skool breaks, and funky progressive house.

Also, right around this time, I started to see a drastic decline in vinyl, with more and more promos coming on CD. Only about half these tracks were on disc, so you'll probably notice some authentic vinyl hiss, clicks and pops here and there.

On deck, I've got some classics by Blackwatch & Greed, Jam & Spoon, The Chemical Brothers featuring Q-Tip, and The Crystal Method. Plus, cuts on some memorable labels like Looq, 19 Box, Four:Twenty, Astralwerks, Wallop, and Distinctive. Later in the show, there's some juicy gems by Hybrid, Paul Hamill, Benz & MD, Shafunkers, and Subsky.

Hello boys and girls, it's Robert Oleysyck, and welcome to Episode 60 of The Feel Sessions. This time, it's another live brunch set, over two hours worth, recorded a couple of weeks ago from my residency at Herringbone in the Aria Hotel. Like I always say, good music is good music, regardless of style, and with brunch, I love the freedom it affords me to to navigate various genres, and transport people to another place and time with grooves that just plain feel good. So, this summer, when you're at the pool, on the beach, or taking a road trip, take a dreamy ride.

Coming up, I'll weave a mix comprised of a dash of chill-out electronica, soul, reggae, and coastal jams, with splashes of some yacht rock classics, including Sade, Jamiroquai, Maroon 5, 311, Sublime, Lenny Kravitz, the Eagles, the Beatles, David Bowie, and yes, even Depeche Mode and Squeeze. Later in the show, you'll hear some of my modern favorites including ZHU, Pharrell, Daft Punk, The Weeknd, and a stellar remix of Michael Jackson, and a Rhythm Scholar remix of A Tribe Called Quest. It's all topped off with some shoe gazing, blissful, indie vibes by Geowulf (one of my latest obsessions by the way,) Lana Del Rey, KT Tunstall, GoldRoom, and some groovy NuDisco.

The original, by Danny Tenaglia and Celeda in 1998 on the infamous Twisted America imprint, is a true dance floor classic, and it's about time it's been re-done, and, to great effect I might add.

It was originally produced by Ralph Falcon, who is better known for his work as part of the infamous production outfits Murk, Liberty, City, and Funky Green Dogs, which is why it had such a distinctive sound. Kudos to Chus & Ceballos for blowing the dust off this classic, and updating it for today's sound. So yeah, it's been a while. After doing so many new mixes, every single week, for last year's run on Pulse FM... I needed a break. And, it took a little while to get back on track. Yes, I've missed you all too.
Special thanks to my dear friend Reeann over in Colorado, for giving me a little friendly nudge.

On this episode, I'm gonna take you on a little detour. It's a live recording from September of 2016, during one of my brunch sets at Herringbone in the Aria Hotel. I've been a resident DJ there for a year and a half now, and I've gotta tell ya, it's been such a rewarding experience to play a very unique format and sound that I developed for this gig.

Playing in such a beautiful outdoor patio space and setting gave me the opportunity to flex my programming muscles, and be inspired, while presenting a mix of electronica, indie, nu disco, deep house, trip hop, funk/soul, retro, remixes, covers, and, ethnic, balearic vibes… plus some other random gems here and there.

So, here we go, and I hope you enjoy my spin on the Las Vegas Brunch sound. Starting off with an acoustic remake of the recently departed Robert Miles… rest in peace. Here's, Children. Enjoy!

It's that time of year, so while we're in the Halloween spirit, here's a vinyl flashback mix from 2001, I called "Hallowed Breaks". I intentionally shopped for Drum & Bass and Jungle records that were pressed at 45 RPM, but sounded good to me played at 33 RPM. So, it pitched everything down, and created some twisted, thick and funky breaks, with menacing overtones, and a haunting, spooky vibe, perfect for the season. Unfortunately, these records are boxed up somewhere and I didn't write down the damn track listing . . . so here we go, in preparation for Halloween, this is "Hallowed Breaks". Enjoy.
